Commercial Truck Insurance for New Drivers

There is a varied world for commercial truck insurance for new drivers. Finding the right insurance can
be very difficult because of all the stipulations that are being placed on these drivers especially now. You
also need to be able to stay in business and get a price that you can work with. Finding both can be a
taxing and difficult thing to do. At Truck Insurance Helpers we can get the best outcome for all those
questions. Below is a guide and some considerations when going on this hunt for insurance. Please
read through, and let me know if any questions.

New CDL Driver Insurance

In this new world of trucking insurance it is very hard to find insurance for New CDL Drivers. If they have
under one year experience it is next to impossible. Some of the issues that may arise because of this
situation are the fact that these drivers have little to no experience and the risk is much great for them to
driver. They also pose a much bigger risk for the insurance company. As a new CDL Driver it will be
very difficult to find insurance without already have met the two year rule.

The Two Year Rule?

What is the is the two year rule? It is the unwritten rule that most underwriters in insurance companies
have in regard to getting insurance for a new driver. They want to see that the driver has experience,
and have that comfort level that they have the experience behind the truck. Sometimes certain insurance
companies will make an exception at one year or even six years experience, but it is very rare and the
circumstances always depend. Couple this with the fact that most new drivers are just getting started
and don’t have the business acumen or understanding that is needed to run a business.. Drivers finding
themselves in this situation are looking for options and just a chance.

Truck Insurance Helpers

With Truck insurance Helpers we can get you that quote and also find a company that will offer you
competitive insurance as a new driver. We will also be able to guide you through the underwriting
process that can be very challenging. You have to find the right markets, but also get them to offer the
right price.

  • What are some of the biggest things to consider when it comes to commercial truck insurance for new
drivers? There are some very distinct and important items to consider.
  • What types of insurance do you need
  • What type of driver are you? Do you have violations, accidents etc?
  • What type of vehicle are you going to have? What is the age, value, etc?
  • What are you going to be hauling?
  • Finding the best trucking insurance companies

These are just a few of the items to consider. So the first step is always what types of insurance do you
need?

Usually you will need the below insurances to get started.

  • $750,000 -$ 1,000,000 Auto Liability Insurance – This is the auto liability coverage for if you hit
  • another person on the road and cause property damage or bodily injury to them.
  • $100,000-$250,000 Motor Truck Cargo – This is to cover the items that you are hauilng in your
  • truck/trailer.
  • Comprehensive/Collision insurance for the truck/trailer
  • General Liability Insurance(not mandatory depending on who you are hauling for.) If you are
  • hauling for Amazon or RMIS or other types of companies like this you may need this coverage.
  • Trailer Interchange – Usually between $30,000-$50,000 if you are going to use non-owned
  • trailers. These can always vary depending on the type of trailer you are using etc.
  • Hazardous Material coverage – This may not be needed because you may not be hauling
  • hazardous materials
  • Refrigeration Breakdown Coverage – This may be needed if you are hauling refrigerated goods
  • Workers Compensation insurance – This may be needed if you have employees that you are
  • considering hiring.
  • Bobtail Insurance/Deadhead Insurance – If you have owner operators that may be working with
  • you, you might need this coverage
  • Pollution Liability coverage – This will cover if oil gets spilled on the ground and clean up for it.
  • Some companies include it others may exclude it
  • Towing/Storage coverage – One of the big items that could be missed by a new driver is a towing
  • and storage insurance coverage. Many insurance companies are excluding this type of coverage
  • and can leave you exposed. A tow big could cost quite a bit of money with clean up etc in a
  • claim. You will want to make sure you have yourself covered with this as well.
  • Business Interruption insurance – Many companies may not offer this coverage, but it will cover
  • downtimes during a claim etc for the business. It might be worth looking into
  • Umbrella/Excess Insurance – In some contracts especially Hazardous Material contracts you may
  • need to have an umbrella/excess insurance policy. This is to protect over and above the
  • $1,000,000 that most shippers/brokers require.
  • Various other insurances – Depending on the type of insurance you will need, there may be other
  • specialty insurances to consider, that you can go over with an agent.

Insurance for new truck drivers

The next consideration that you need to look at when it comes to getting the best rate and best insurance
as a new driver is your driving record. As a high risk driver you may get much higher rates or more
requirements to driver. If you have accidents, tickets, or violations on your record, it can make it more
difficult to get insured. It kind of goes without saying. Knowing this may help level your expectations.
The nice part is we can find affordable insurance for any driver with the markets we have available to us.
If you have been turned down, give us a shot and we will get it done.

A big consideration that has come up recently is the type of vehicle that you are going to drive and the
age of the vehicle. Some court cases with older vehicles have made some insurance companies leary to
insure an older vehicle. Also the appetite of many insurers is based on what they are confortable writing
insurance for. If you have a box truck there may be a different market for that type of vehicle vs a semi
truck. Generally the lower the weight of the vehicle, the lower the price. We can help you navigate this
though and get the best price for whatever vehicle you may have.

Motor Truck Cargo Insurance

Motor Truck cargo insurance is becoming increasingly difficult to find based on what the risk is and also
the history of the company or driver. It is important to find the company that is confortable with insuring
the type of cargo that you may want to haul. You may have special considerations like refrigeration
breakdown, hazardous material, electronics, alcohol, bullion, jewelry, explosives etc. All these have
different underwriters. Navigating to the correct underwriter is the key as a driver. Getting that guidance
is very important to us and we will help you get the right company for the right cargo.

If you are searching for the best insurance companies for new truck drivers, it will be difficult to try and
find them all. It is important to have someone help you this journey. If you get the right markets, it is easy
to get commercial insurance for new drivers. We can help you with this and get you the best price and
result. Don’t navigate the world of insurance without the right map. If you have that, you will get the best
result. Please give us a call at 385-269-0822, and we can help you get this handled.

Understanding High-Risk Trucking Insurance: What It Means & How to Get Covered

If you or your trucking company have run into safety violations, accidents, a poor driving record, or transport high-risk cargo, you might be considered “high risk” by insurance carriers. Being labeled high risk doesn’t mean you’re uninsurable—but it does mean higher premiums, stricter policy terms, and more diligence required. In this post, we’ll go through what makes an operation “high risk,” the challenges involved, and strategies to get better, more affordable coverage.

What Makes a Trucking Operation “High Risk”?

Here are some of the most common factors:

  • Driving history & violations: Accidents, DUIs, multiple traffic tickets.
  • Poor safety scores / compliance metrics: For example, high SMS (Safety Measurement System) or high CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) scores from FMCSA.
  • Type of cargo hauled: Hazardous materials, oversized loads, livestock, or other difficult freight.
  • Operating conditions: Harsh routes, areas with higher accident/fatality rates, severe weather exposure.
  • Length of business operation / experience: New ventures or people without much of a track record can be viewed as higher risk.
  • Maintenance & equipment condition: Older trucks, lack of preventive maintenance, or frequent downtime raise rates.

Why High-Risk Status Raises Insurance Costs

Insurance companies price for the probability of future claims. If the risk of loss is higher, premiums go up.

Limited number of carriers willing to insure high-risk operations; fewer options means less competitive pricing.

Stricter policy terms: higher deductibles, higher coverage levels required, more endorsements, maybe more inspections.

Potential regulatory scrutiny: noncompliance leads to penalties and may increase insurance costs or even disqualify operations from certain markets.

Types of Coverage You’ll Need

Coverage TypeWhat It CoversWhy It Matters for High-Risk
Primary LiabilityBodily injury & property damage you causeLegally required; big payout exposures if claims happen
Cargo InsuranceDamage or loss of the freight you’re haulingIf hauling high-value or fragile goods, this can be a large liability
Physical DamageDamage to your own truck – collisions, weather, theftTrucks are expensive; repair/replacement costs are high
Non-trucking Liability / BobtailIf you drive without a load or under certain conditions not under dispatchMany gaps in coverage here if you don’t have it
Endorsements / Specialized CoverageHaz-mat, oversized loads, environmental liability, etc. These are often required by law or contract; missing them can be very costly

How to Manage Costs & Improve Your Risk Profile

Even if you’re high risk now, there are ways to reduce rates and broaden your options:

Improve safety metrics

Participate in safety training programs

Maintain and document equipment inspections & repairs

Use telematics / GPS / dashcams to monitor driver behavior

Shop with brokers who specialize in high-risk trucking

They know the insurers that will work with companies with bad histories

They can help structure policies and recommend mitigations

Raise deductibles or accept higher retention in exchange for lower premiums (if financially manageable)

Gradually show a clean record: fewer violations, accidents, better safety compliance, lower CSA/SMS scores

Strategic route planning / cargo selection: Avoid excessive risk when possible; avoid high-claim zones if practical

Starting out as a new CDL driver or new venture owner-operator is exciting—but one of the trickiest parts is getting properly insured. Because you lack a proven record, insurers often see new drivers as higher risk. But understanding what coverages you need, what to expect, and how to work around common pitfalls can save time and money. This guide is for those just getting started in trucking insurance. Any company in the business of delivering goods puts their own equipment on the line with every job. Transporting hazardous and flammable materials such as butane and propane are even riskier in the event of an accident, so keeping your property covered with adequate insurance is even more important. While traditional coverage elements such as general liability and health insurance are critical to keeping your business going in the face of third-party claims and injuries, automobile liability and physical damage coverage help protect your vehicles and equipment.

What Insurance Coverage Do New Drivers Need?

Here are core coverages and what they do:

  • Primary Liability Insurance – This is legally required for commercial trucking. It covers injuries or damages you cause to others.
  • Physical Damage Insurance – Covers damage to your vehicle (collision, weather, theft, etc.). If your rig is financed or expensive, this is especially important.
  • Cargo Insurance – For the freight you haul; necessary especially if contracts require it.
  • General Liability – Covers third-party injuries or property damage that isn’t directly tied to trucking operations.
  • Non-Trucking Liability / Bobtail Insurance – If your truck is being used off dispatch or during other non-covered operations.
  • Special Endorsements — HazMat, oversized load, refrigerated freight, etc., depending on what you haul.

Common Challenges & Mistakes for New Drivers

Underestimating cost: Without experience, insurers often charge higher premiums.

Taking minimum coverage: To save money, new operators sometimes underinsure themselves, which can backfire in a big claim.

Not understanding all the requirements: State, federal, contract obligations can differ. Missing certain endorsements or coverages can violate contracts or regulations.

Failing to maintain good records early: Driver logs, maintenance, safety reports—the earlier you build a clean history, the better.

Not comparing quotes: New drivers might accept what a local agent offers without knowing what might be available elsewhere.

Tips to Save Money & Get Better Coverage as a New Driver

Take safety / driver training courses — anything that shows you’re serious about safe operation helps with premiums.

Get leased-on or work under established carriers — sometimes insurance is easier when operating as part of a larger or more established operation.

Start with appropriate equipment — newer, well-maintained, safety-equipped trucks help (lights, braking systems, telematics).

Review multiple insurers / brokers — use brokers familiar with trucking; some insurers specialize in new venture programs.

Choose the right deductible & endorsements — balancing cost vs protection matters. Sometimes paying a bit more now saves much more later.

Document everything — maintenance, logs, driver performance, safety inspections. These help when applying for lower rates over time.

If you’re a new driver, getting good trucking insurance is one of the most important first steps in launching your business. Don’t spin your wheels over overpaying or getting insufficient coverage. Reach out, get quotes, compare, and make sure you start off with protection that grows with you.

Commercial Auto Liability Insurance for Truckers

You hit the road with a heavy load, determined to make it across the country or across town, swiftly and smoothly. But you’re hit with some unexpected surprises instead. According to the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, trucking transportation occupations accounted for slightly more than a quarter of all work-related fatalities last year, more than any other U.S. job.*

Of course, you enjoy your job and look forward to the open road every day. You never expect anything to happen, but here are a few sobering facts: a total of 3,852 people died in large truck crashes in 2015. 16% of these deaths were truck occupants, 69% were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles, and 15 percent were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists.**

While not nearly every truck accident results in a fatality, there can be significant financial ramifications. Case in point: a woman sued a trucking company when a trucker jack-knifed his rig across the highway at night. She sustained head injuries and received a $602,000 settlement. Can you afford damages like these? If you’re like most truck drivers, the answer is a resounding “No!” That’s why you need commercial auto liability insurance for truckers from Truck Insurance Helpers.

How does automobile liability coverage protect your business?

Transporting propane can result in property damage and injury if there’s a collision. But automobile liability coverage protects your company’s assets from third-party claims by settling claims and making required payments up to your insurance limits. This liability coverage also protects your business from fines and penalties, as more and more states require businesses to have automobile liability for any business that involves travel or transportation.

What is automobile physical damage insurance?

If you have liability coverage for collisions, that will help protect your business from claims and civil suits from the other party. But automobile physical damage insurance protects your own vehicle after an incident. If there is a collision or fire, or even if your truck is stolen or vandalized, this coverage will help cover the costs of repairs and replacement. If your truck includes specialized equipment for loading and safely transporting butane or propane, adding coverage for those assets is also essential.

Whether you and your employees use your own vehicles for transporting butane and propane or your business has vehicles solely for hauling, adequately covering their risks is an essential part of protecting your business. If you want to make sure your business has all the liability and automobile insurance it needs, talk to an expert at Truck Insurance Helpers
